Phoebe Ball of Clay & Ball Wanaka

Hello, I'm Phoebe

I'm the potter behind Clay & Ball, working from my studio nestled in the beautiful Mount Aspiring Valley in Wanaka, New Zealand.

Most days, you’ll find me at the lake with my partner and our three dogs — Fly, Eggsy and Boogie. When we’re not chasing balls into the icy waters of Lake Wānaka, I’m in the studio: throwing at the wheel, glazing, or loading the kiln (often with a dog or two at my feet).

I first started pottery in 2022, taking a weekly class down by Dublin Bay. I quickly fell in love with the process — the rhythm of the wheel, the slowness, the learning. After a few months, I bought my own wheel and converted part of my garage into a tiny studio. I began by selling to friends and family, gradually refining my style and technique until I reached a place I felt proud of.

In May 2023, I released my first collection into the world.

Alongside this small ceramics practice, I also study veterinary nursing — both paths are grounded in care, patience, and quiet attention to detail.

Since then, I’ve continued to evolve my work, expand the collection, and connect with other small businesses and thoughtful customers who value handmade.

I create with people and their spaces in mind. I believe home should be a sanctuary — a place to slow down, feel safe, and feel yourself. The objects we live with play a quiet but powerful role in that. It’s the everyday pieces — the ones we hold, use, and return to — that help shape our routines and bring comfort to the everyday.

I aim to make work that feels good in your hands, that’s both useful and beautiful, and that becomes part of the rhythm of your home.
