What is Stoneware Pottery? A Guide to Handmade Ceramics

2 min read

Stoneware pottery is one of the most durable and versatile forms of ceramics, commonly used for functional pieces like mugs, bowls, and plates. At its core, stoneware is made from natural clay that is fired at high temperatures, creating a strong, long-lasting material that is perfect for everyday use.

In my Wanaka-based studio in New Zealand, I work primarily with stoneware clay to create handmade ceramic mugs and functional pottery designed to be both beautiful and practical.

What makes stoneware different?

Stoneware is fired at a higher temperature than earthenware, which makes it non-porous, strong, and resistant to chipping. This means it doesn’t need glazing to be waterproof, although most stoneware pieces are glazed for aesthetic and functional reasons.

Because of its strength, stoneware is ideal for items that are used daily, like coffee mugs and tea cups.

Handmade stoneware vs mass-produced ceramics

One of the biggest differences with handmade pottery is the individuality of each piece.

No two handmade mugs or vessels will ever be exactly the same — and that’s the beauty of them. Subtle variations in shape, glaze, and texture aren’t flaws; they’re part of the story and what make each piece unique.

Mass-produced ceramics are made to look identical, which can be great for consistency — but they often miss the character, warmth, and personality that comes with something made by hand.

When you choose handmade stoneware, you’re choosing something thoughtfully made, with its own little quirks and charm — something that feels truly yours.

Why choose handmade stoneware mugs?

There’s something special about drinking from a mug that’s been made by hand. It’s not just about function — it’s about using something every day that feels personal, thoughtful, and made to last.

Why people love them: • Durable stoneware made for everyday use • Every glaze turns out differently, so no two are ever the same • They feel beautiful in your hands — tactile, weighty, and comforting to use • You’re supporting handmade, small-batch pottery and the maker behind it

Each mug is wheel-thrown and shaped by hand, then finished in glazes that react differently in the kiln — making every single piece completely unique.

My approach in Wanaka, New Zealand

My pottery is made in small batches in Wanaka, surrounded by mountains and natural landscapes that heavily influence our work. We focus on earthy tones, natural textures, and functional forms that reflect slow living and everyday rituals.

Each piece is designed to be used—not just displayed—bringing handmade ceramics into daily life.

Final thoughts

Stoneware pottery sits at the heart of functional handmade ceramics. It is strong, beautiful, and deeply connected to traditional craft techniques.

Whether you’re choosing a mug for your morning coffee or gifting something special, handmade stoneware offers something mass-produced ceramics cannot—character, story, and individuality.
